Reflect and Repent / Reflexionar y Arrepentirse

On Sunday, Lent will end and Holy Week will begin. I will use this day to reflect on the things I did and failed to do during these last six weeks of preparation for the Passion of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. It’s time to ask myself, have I been successful in keeping my focus on Him through prayer, repentance and personal sacrifice during this Lenten journey?

The verse before the Gospel states: “Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.” Have I listened to God’s Word with attention and an open heart this Lent? Have I examined my conscience and gone to confession to help prepare for the upcoming Holy Week? 

Am I ready to endure with Him who sacrificed everything for me and for all throughout time? Have I been forgiving? Am I merciful? Do I strive to leave a positive footprint in the world? Is my compassion increasing in this world? Am I loving others as God asks me to?

O Lord, as this most sacred week of the year approaches, grant me a renewed spirit and a new heart. I strive to be available to You and your will in my life. Amen.

Este domingo se acaba la Cuaresma y comienza la Semana Santa. Voy a utilizar este día para reflexionar sobre las cosas que hice y dejé de hacer durante estas últimas seis semanas de preparación para la Pasión de Jesucristo, mi Señor y Salvador. Es hora de preguntarme: ¿he logrado mantener mi enfoque en Él a través de la oración, el arrepentimiento y el sacrificio personal durante esta Cuaresma?

El versículo anterior al Evangelio dice: “Tus palabras, Señor, son espíritu y vida. Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.” ¿He escuchado la Palabra de Dios con atención y con el corazón abierto en esta Cuaresma? ¿He examinado mi conciencia y me he confesado para ayudar a prepararme para la Semana Santa?

¿Estoy dispuesto a perseverar con Aquel que sacrificó todo por mí y por todos a lo largo de los tiempos? ¿He perdonado? ¿Soy misericordioso? ¿Me esfuerzo por dejar una huella positiva en el mundo? ¿Está aumentando la compasión en este mundo por mi esfuerzo? ¿Estoy amando a los demás como Dios me pide?

Oh Señor, al acercarse esta semana tan sagrada, concédeme un espíritu renovado y un corazón nuevo. Me esfuerzo por estar disponible para Ti y tu voluntad en mi vida. Amén.

Jesus is God / Jesucristo es Dios

Today we hear unequivocally that Jesus is one with the Father. For the Pharisees, and indeed all Jews alike, Jesus’ words are blasphemous. How can a mere man standing before us claim the same title as God? 

It’s an easy scene to imagine. There stand the Pharisees, chuckling to themselves at the start of the reading. “Now we are sure that you are possessed,” they say after Jesus claims authority over death. “How absurd,” they mutter to themselves. “Even Abraham, who we know spoke with God, died and is no longer on this earth. Who on earth do you think you are, Jesus? All the important people have died before you, what makes you so special?” 

Jesus could have softened His speech. He had every opportunity to modify His claim of authority over death and His relationship with the Father. But just like in the Bread of Life discourses about the Eucharist, Jesus doubles down on what He has proclaimed.

 “It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’” (John 8:54)

“You do not know him [the Father], but I know him.” (John 8:55)

“Before Abraham came to be, I AM.” (John 8:58)

“I AM” was the same name that God gave to Moses in the burning bush. Jesus isn’t saying He is one important person among many. He isn’t one of the prophets who can hear God’s words. He is God. No conditions, exceptions, or ambiguities. 

Jesus is God, yesterday, today and forever. He was there at Creation, He walked this earth, He conquered death, and He is on the altar every single day in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The question we should ask ourselves is, “Does this make a difference in my life?” I hope it does, because Jesus being truly God changes the very fabric and being of our existence. Before Jesus, death was our only available end. After Jesus restored us to a right relationship with our Creator, eternity opened up to us. 

Pope Francis, in his General Audience talk on August 10, 2022, spoke about how our life on earth is a form of “novitiate” where we learn to appreciate God’s gift, honoring the responsibility of sharing it and making it bear fruit for everyone. Recognizing each day that Jesus is God helps us continue on our journey toward everlasting life.

Hoy escuchamos inequívocamente que Jesús es uno con el Padre. Para los fariseos, y de hecho para todos los judíos, las palabras de Jesús son blasfemas. ¿Cómo puede un simple hombre que se presenta ante nosotros darse el mismo título que Dios?

Es una escena fácil de imaginar. Allí están los fariseos, riéndose al comienzo de la lectura. “Ahora ya no cabe duda de que estás endemoniado,” dicen después de que Jesús afirma tener autoridad sobre la muerte. “¡Qué absurdo!” murmuran. “Incluso Abraham, quien sabemos que habló con Dios, murió y ya no está en esta tierra. ¿Quién diablos crees que eres, Jesús? Todas las personas importantes han muerto antes que tú, ¿qué te hace tan especial?”

Jesús podría haber suavizado su discurso. Tuvo cada oportunidad para modificar su autoridad sobre la muerte y su relación con el Padre. Pero al igual que en los discursos del Pan de Vida sobre la Eucaristía, Jesús repite lo que ha proclamado.

 “El que me glorifica es mi Padre, aquel de quien ustedes dicen: ‘Es nuestro Dios.’” (Juan 8,54)

“…no lo conocen [al Padre]. Yo, en cambio, sí lo conozco.” (Juan 8,55)

“Yo les aseguro que desde antes que naciera Abraham, Yo Soy.” (Juan 8,58)

“YO SOY” fue el mismo nombre que Dios le dio a Moisés en la zarza ardiente. Jesús no está diciendo que sea una persona importante entre muchas. No es uno de los profetas que pueden escuchar las palabras de Dios. Él es Dios, sin condiciones, excepciones o ambigüedades.

Jesús es Dios, ayer, hoy y por los siglos. Estuvo presente en la Creación, caminaba por esta tierra, conquistó la muerte y está en el altar todos los días en el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa. La pregunta que debemos hacernos es: “¿Esto hace una diferencia en mi vida? ” Espero que así sea, porque el hecho de que Jesús sea verdaderamente Dios cambia la estructura misma y el ser de nuestra existencia. Antes de Jesús, la muerte era nuestro único fin disponible. Después de que Jesús nos restauró una relación correcta con nuestro Creador, la eternidad se abrió ante nosotros.

El Papa Francisco, en su discurso de la Audiencia General del 10 de agosto de 2022, habló de cómo nuestra vida en la tierra es una forma de “noviciado” donde aprendemos a apreciar el don de Dios, honrando la responsabilidad de compartirlo y hacerlo fructificar para todos. Reconocer cada día que Jesús es Dios nos ayuda a continuar nuestro camino hacia la vida eterna

Am I Right or Am I Right? / ¿Tengo la Razón o Tengo la Razón?

At the time of Jesus’s life, many of the Jews were looking for the Messiah. The Pharisees used the letter of the law to do everything just right, in the hopes that they would be prepared for the Messiah. There was only one problem. They become so worried about being right, that they missed the Truth even when He was standing right in front of them. Jesus asks the Pharisee’s to trust him and they can’t see their way around everything they are doing “right” to find the freedom that comes from trusting God. 

Daniel gives us the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to illustrate God’s power and the security of our lives when we trust God. When forced to choose between the king and faith in God, they chose God and willingly accepted the punishment of the king. By trusting God in the fiery furnace, heated seven times hotter than usual, God was able to act. He sent an angel to guard Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and through God’s action, King Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God’s power. 

As we continue our Lenten journey, let us not become so concerned with being right and doing all the right things, that we forget the lesson of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. We temper our physical selves during Lent so that we are better prepared to trust God, to sing his praises, no matter what the world brings to our doorstep. Regardless of what trial or furnace we find ourselves facing, may we be prepared to agree with King Nebuchadnezzar and sing out with the psalmist, “Blessed are you, O Lord…praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.”

En la época de la vida de Jesús, muchos de los judíos buscaban al Mesías. Los fariseos usaron la letra de la ley para hacer todo correctamente, con la esperanza de estar preparados para el Mesías. Había un solo problema. Se preocupan tanto por tener la razón, que se perdieron la Verdad incluso cuando estaba parado en frente suyo. Daniel nos cuenta la historia de Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego para ilustrar el poder de Dios y la seguridad de nuestras vidas cuando confiamos en Dios. Cuando se vieron obligados a elegir entre el rey y la fe en Dios, eligieron a Dios y aceptaron voluntariamente el castigo del rey. Al confiar en Dios en el horno de fuego, calentado siete veces más de lo habitual, Dios pudo actuar. Envió un ángel para proteger a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego y, mediante la acción de Dios, el rey Nabucodonosor reconoció el poder de Dios.

Beloved Saint Joseph / Querido San José

“Blessed are those who dwell in your house, O Lord; they never cease to praise you.”

This verse before the Gospel reading at today’s Mass certainly describes St. Joseph, whose feast day we celebrate today. There is no doubt that his soul dwells in God’s house where he gives praise to God. In heaven, St. Joseph and Our Lady are worshiping the son they raised on earth together! Consider the final line of today’s Gospel, which says that the twelve-year-old Jesus “went down with [his parents] and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them.” Jesus retains an intimate relationship with them, and he allows them to function as powerful intercessors on our behalf. What a great debt humanity owes to the efficacious, perpetual intercession of Our Lady and St. Joseph.

My husband and I belonged to a parish named St. Joseph for many years and, over time, we came to rely on the help and loving concern of our Savior’s foster-father.  We are convinced that his intercession helped attain great grace for our family. 

When my husband’s father was diagnosed with advanced cancer, he and my mother-in-law came to live with us. For many years, my in-laws had traveled the country, serving others, praying with others, and sharing the love of Christ whenever and wherever they could. Though they had left the Catholic Church twenty-five years earlier, their faith in Christ was radical and inspiring. 

Now, with a terminal diagnosis, my father-in-law was approaching his eternal reward. It was a painful, beautiful time, and my husband, though he had always yearned for his dad to return to the Church, rejoiced in his father’s faithfulness to God. Nevertheless, he wanted the absolute best for his dad as he approached the end of his life, so he turned to St. Joseph for help. Every day, my husband would stop by the church and kneel before the Blessed Sacrament asking for the intercession of St. Joseph. He prayed for three things: that his father would be willing to receive the Anointing of the Sick before he died, and that, after he died, he would be given a funeral Mass and then be buried in our parish cemetery. 

It is a long story, but, miraculously, all three requests were granted. We believe that St. Joseph’s intercession played a pivotal role in this happy outcome. With St. Teresa of Avila, we say, “Would that I could persuade all men to be devout to this glorious saint, for I know by…experience what blessings he can obtain for us from God.” Thank you, beloved St. Joseph, for your faithful witness, your tremendous role in salvation history, and your on-going, loving intercession.

“Dichosos los que viven en tu casa; siempre, Señor, te alabarán.”

La aclamación antes del Evangelio en la Misa de hoy ciertamente describe a San José, cuya fiesta celebramos hoy. No hay duda de que su alma habita en la casa de Dios donde alaba a Dios. ¡En el cielo, San José y Nuestra Señora están adorando al hijo que criaron juntos en la tierra! Considere la última línea del Evangelio de hoy, que dice que Jesús, con doce años de edad, “volvió con [sus padres] a Nazaret y siguió sujeto a su autoridad.” Jesús conserva una relación íntima con ellos y les permite actuar como poderosos intercesores a nombre nuestro. ¡Qué gran deuda tiene la humanidad con la eficaz y perpetua intercesión de Nuestra Señora y San José!

Mi esposo y yo pertenecimos a una parroquia llamada San José durante muchos años y, con el tiempo, llegamos a depender de la ayuda y la preocupación amorosa del padre adoptivo de nuestro Salvador. Estamos convencidos que su intercesión nos ayudó a alcanzar grandes gracias para nuestra familia.

Cuando al padre de mi esposo le diagnosticaron con cáncer avanzado, él y mi suegra vinieron a vivir con nosotros. Durante muchos años, mis suegros habían viajado por el país, sirviendo a los demás, orando con otros y compartiendo el amor de Cristo cuando y donde podían. Aunque habían abandonado la Iglesia católica veinticinco años antes, su fe en Cristo era radical e inspiradora.

Ahora, con un diagnóstico terminal, mi suegro se acercaba a su recompensa eterna. Fue un momento hermoso y doloroso, y mi esposo, aunque siempre había anhelado que su papá regresara a la Iglesia, se regocijaba en la fidelidad de su papá a Dios. Sin embargo, quería lo mejor para él y cuando se acercaba el final de su vida, recurrió a San José en busca de ayuda. Todos los días, mi esposo pasaba por la iglesia y se arrodillaba ante el Santísimo Sacramento pidiendo la intercesión de San José. Oró por tres cosas: que su padre estuviera dispuesto a recibir la Unción de los Enfermos antes de morir, y que, después de su muerte, se le ofreciera una Misa fúnebre y luego fuera enterrado en nuestro cementerio parroquial.

Es una larga historia, pero, milagrosamente, las tres solicitudes fueron concedidas. Creemos que la intercesión de San José jugó un papel fundamental en este feliz resultado. Con Santa Teresa de Ávila decimos: “Ojalá pudiera persuadir a todos los hombres a ser devotos de este glorioso santo, porque sé por… experiencia propia qué bendiciones puede obtenernos de Dios”. Gracias, querido San José, por tu fiel testimonio, tu tremendo papel en la historia de la salvación y tu continua y amorosa intercesión.

The Divine Teacher / El Divino Maestro

“But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them.” (John 8:2)

This may seem like a pretty simple verse from our Gospel today, but a little context into the traditions of the Ancient Near East certainly makes this verse pop. In this culture, it was customary for teachers to sit down while they were proclaiming the truth. All throughout Scripture this is made evident from the kings, to the Pharisees, to Jesus himself. Here we are being taught in an implicit way that Jesus is the Divine Teacher. 

We can see this tradition of sitting while teaching also presented in art. If you look at the Catechism, you will find the picture of Jesus sitting down as a shepherd and teacher. Every single catechism has this catechetical image in it. There is a sheep that is looking intently at Jesus while he teaches. It is surrounded by a tree and Jesus is holding a shepherd’s staff and some panpipes. 

So why am I bringing up all this imagery from the Catechism? This image is an icon, if you will, of how we should approach the faith. By looking at it, we can see deeper truths about who Jesus is and how we should respond. The tree brings us back to the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the garden where we lost grace. It also reminds us of the power of the cross when Christ climbs on a tree to die for our sins. The pan pipes are used by shepherds to call the sheep back into their arms. It is the same with the shepherd’s staff. They are specifically designed to be able to pull sheep back to safety. 

Jesus also takes the posture of a teacher. The catechism takes this even further by saying that God has a divine pedagogy. Again, we need some context here. A pedagogue was someone who accompanied the kids to school and made sure that the lessons they learned there would be applied to their lives in the home. In other words, they were constantly teaching. Jesus as the good teacher is the same. The difference with Jesus is that he is always present to us. We might hear a good talk or Youtube video or podcast, but all of those things fade. Real conversion happens in the heart, where Jesus resides. 

Struggling with a sin or a certain teaching of the Church? Jesus sits down to meet you at your level and bring you into his love. Find yourself lost? Jesus invites you to embrace the power of the cross. We can use these keys that we find in Scripture and the Catechism to realize that God is the Divine Teacher, always present to us and constantly calling us home.

“[A]l amanecer se presentó de nuevo en el templo, donde la multitud se le acercaba; y él, sentado entre ellos, les enseñaba.” (Juan 8,2)

Este puede parecer un versículo bastante simple del Evangelio de hoy, pero un poco de contexto en las tradiciones del Antiguo Oriente Cercano ciertamente hace que este versículo destaque. En esta cultura, era costumbre que los maestros se sentaran mientras proclamaban la verdad. A lo largo de toda la Escritura esto se hace evidente, desde los reyes hasta los fariseos y el mismo Jesús. Aquí se nos enseña de manera implícita que Jesús es el Maestro Divino.

Podemos ver esta tradición de sentarse al enseñar también presente en el arte. Si miras el Catecismo, encontrarás la imagen de Jesús sentado como pastor y maestro. Cada catecismo tiene esta imagen catequética. Hay una oveja que mira fijamente a Jesús mientras enseña. Está rodeado por un árbol y Jesús sostiene un cayado de pastor y unos caramillos.

Bueno, ¿por qué menciono todas estas imágenes del Catecismo? Esta imagen es un ícono, por así decirlo, de cómo debemos abordar la fe. Al mirarlo, podemos ver verdades más profundas sobre quién es Jesús y cómo debemos responder. El árbol nos devuelve al árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal en el jardín donde perdimos la gracia. También nos recuerda del poder de la cruz cuando Cristo sube a un árbol para morir por nuestros pecados. Los pastores utilizan los caramillos para llamar a las ovejas a sus brazos. Lo mismo ocurre con el cayado del pastor. Están diseñados específicamente para poder llevar a las ovejas a un lugar seguro.

Jesús también adopta la postura de un maestro. El catecismo va aún más lejos al decir que Dios tiene una pedagogía divina. Nuevamente, necesitamos algo de contexto aquí. Un pedagogo era alguien que acompañaba a los niños a la escuela y se aseguraba de que las lecciones que aprendían allí se aplicaran a sus vidas en el hogar. En otras palabras, estaban constantemente enseñando. Jesús, como buen maestro, es el mismo. La diferencia con Jesús es que él siempre está presente para nosotros. Es posible que escuchemos una buena charla, un vídeo de Youtube o un podcast, pero todas esas cosas se desvanecen. La verdadera conversión ocurre en el corazón, donde reside Jesús.

¿Luchando con un pecado o contra una cierta enseñanza de la Iglesia? Jesús se sienta para encontrarte a tu nivel y llevarte a su amor. ¿Te encuentras perdido? Jesús te invita a abrazar el poder de la cruz. Podemos usar estas claves que encontramos en las Escrituras y el Catecismo para darnos cuenta de que Dios es el Maestro Divino, siempre presente ante nosotros y constantemente llamándonos a casa.

The Dynamic of the Grain of Wheat / La Dinámica del Grano de Trigo

Have you ever noticed how the Scriptures are filled with people just like ourselves whose lives take unexpected turns and then blossom in ways that can only be described as flourishing in and for the Kingdom of God.

Take Jacob. His “before” was manipulating his father’s blessing from his brother Esau and then serving his uncle Laban for many years, eventually marrying his daughters Leah and Rachel. His “after” was being the patriarch of the twelve tribes of Israel who escaped from Egypt, received the Law, and were chosen by God to be his covenant people. To this day, we can read in Revelation 21 that on the twelve gates that belong to the New Jerusalem are written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. The New Jerusalem itself sits on twelve foundations representing the twelve apostles who would reign over the twelve tribes of Israel.

Take Moses. His “before” was the life of Pharaoh’s daughter’s adopted son in Egypt. We all know the story. His “after” was the fulfillment of God’s call to be the leader of his people to the Promised Land. Even now, the Christian understanding of the Paschal Mystery is rooted in the Exodus narrative. 

Between the “before” and the “after” of each of these biblical figures there is a point of struggle and epiphany. When Jesus says that the grain of wheat must fall to the ground and die if it is to be more than just a single grain, if it is to bear fruit, Jesus is talking about just this dynamic which plays out also in our own lives. Who we think we are, who we discover ourselves to be as we grow up and mature and try to figure out life, all this eventually needs to give way to the fullness of the way God lifts our lives up into his mighty and eternal plan. We each have a role to play in God’s Kingdom. We each have a mission in life. We were each created for a purpose. It is in those “hinge” seasons of our lives between the “before” and “after” in which we feel the weight and sorrow of the grain of wheat dying. If you are in one of those “hinge” moments, know that this is one way God raises you up to bring you closer to the fullness of life and his glory.

¿Alguna vez has notado cómo las Escrituras están llenas de personas como nosotros cuyas vidas toman vueltas inesperados y luego florecen de formas que sólo pueden describirse como florecientes en y para el Reino de Dios?

Tomemos como ejemplo a Jacob. Su “antes” fue manipular la bendición de su padre para su hermano Esaú y luego servir a su tío Labán durante muchos años, hasta casarse con sus hijas Lea y Raquel. Su “después” fue ser el patriarca de las doce tribus de Israel que escaparon de Egipto, recibieron la Ley y fueron elegidos por Dios para ser su pueblo de alianza. Hasta el día de hoy, podemos leer en Apocalipsis 21 que en las doce puertas que pertenecen a la Nueva Jerusalén están escritos los nombres de las doce tribus de Israel. La Nueva Jerusalén misma está fundada sobre doce cimientos que representan a los doce apóstoles que reinarían sobre las doce tribus de Israel.

Tomemos a Moisés. Su “antes” fue la vida del hijo adoptivo de la hija de Faraón en Egipto. Todos sabemos la historia. Su “después” fue el cumplimiento del llamado de Dios a ser el líder de su pueblo hacia la Tierra Prometida. Incluso ahora, la comprensión cristiana del Misterio Pascual tiene sus raíces en la narrativa del Éxodo.

Entre el “antes” y el “después” de cada una de estas figuras bíblicas hay un punto de pelea y de epifanía. Cuando Jesús dice que el grano de trigo debe caer al suelo y morir para que sea más que un solo grano, para que dé fruto, Jesús está hablando precisamente de esta dinámica que se desarrolla también en nuestras propias vidas. Quiénes pensamos que somos, quiénes descubrimos que somos a medida que crecemos, maduramos y tratamos de entender la vida, todo esto eventualmente debe dar paso a la plenitud de la manera en que Dios eleva nuestras vidas a su plan poderoso y eterno. Cada uno de nosotros tiene un papel que desempeñar en el Reino de Dios. Cada uno de nosotros tenemos una misión en la vida. Cada uno de nosotros fuimos creados con un propósito. Es en esas estaciones “entremedio” de nuestras vidas entre el “antes” y el “después” en las que sentimos el peso y el dolor del grano de trigo que se muere. Si estás en uno de esos momentos de “entremedio”, debes saber que esta es una manera en que Dios te eleva para acercarte a la plenitud de la vida y su gloria.

Be the Living Word of God / Ser la Palabra Viva de Dios

In todays’ reading we hear about how the Pharisee sent officers out to hear what Jesus had to say and how the officers believed what they heard. In today’s world, we also hear the living Word of our Lord Jesus Christ and as Christians, we share in the mission to make Christ known. All of the faithful, from the Pope to the last person to be baptized, all share that purpose. We are reminded at the end of every Mass when the Priest or Deacon says the following words, “Go in peace glorifying the Lord by your life.”

How, in this crazy world, do we make Christ’s doctrine known? Before we can be effective prophets speaking God’s word into the world, we have to work on drawing closer to God ourselves. 

This is part of our Lenten journey, it is why we take this time every year to step away from the world and focus on what brings us closer to God. How do I talk with God in prayer? I ask Him to help me see the world through the eyes of the Holy Spirit and to bless me with “eyes to see and ears to hear”. This is important whether I’m praying my morning and evening prayers, reading the Bible or just living my daily life. 

We need to practice humility. In this busy world of ours, I have to consciously remind myself to work towards putting others’ needs before my own. There are occasions when I have time-sensitive reports that need to be completed and someone walks into my office with an issue that’s important to them. I still need to stop and be a good listener and ensure they feel heard and understood.That may be the only moment in their day when they experience God’s love. At the end of the day, no matter how laid back or hectic the day is, I give thanks to God. Being conscious of these small acts helps me to better serve and love others. 

So today, find some small way to grow closer to God, so that you too can “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord with your life!”

En la lectura de hoy escuchamos cómo el fariseo envió a unos oficiales para escuchar lo que Jesús tenía que decir y cómo los oficiales creyeron lo que escucharon. En el mundo de hoy, también escuchamos la Palabra viva de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y, como cristianos, compartimos la misión de dar a conocer a Cristo. Todos los fieles, desde el Papa hasta la última persona bautizada, comparten ese propósito. Se nos recuerda al final de cada Misa cuando el Sacerdote o Diácono dice las siguientes palabras: “Vayan en paz, glorificando al Señor con sus vidas.”

¿Cómo, en este mundo loco, damos a conocer la doctrina de Cristo? Antes de que podamos ser profetas eficaces que hablen la palabra de Dios al mundo, tenemos que esforzarnos por acercarnos a Dios nosotros mismos.

Esto es parte de nuestro camino de Cuaresma, es por eso que tomamos esta temporada cada año para alejarnos del mundo y enfocarnos en lo que nos acerca a Dios. ¿Cómo hablo con Dios en oración? Le pido que me ayude a ver el mundo a través de los ojos del Espíritu Santo y que me bendiga con “ojos para ver y oídos para oír”. Esto es importante ya sea que esté rezando las oraciones matutinas y vespertinas, leyendo la Biblia, o simplemente viviendo la vida cotidiana.

Tenemos que practicar la humildad. En este ajetreado mundo nuestro, tengo que recordarme conscientemente que debo trabajar en poner las necesidades de los demás antes de las mías. Hay ocasiones cuando tengo informes urgentes que debo completar y alguien entra a mi oficina con un problema que es importante para ellos. Todavía tengo que detenerme y ser un buen oyente y asegurarme de que se sientan escuchados y comprendidos. Ese puede ser el único momento de su día que experimenten el amor de Dios. Al final del día, no importa cuán relajado o agitado sea el día, le doy gracias a Dios. Ser consciente de estos pequeños actos me ayuda a servir y amar mejor a los demás.

Así que hoy, encuentra una pequeña manera de acercarte más a Dios, para que tú también puedas “¡Ir en paz glorificando al Señor con tu vida!”

The Mirror of Wisdom / El Espejo de la Sabiduría

When reviewing today’s first reading from the book of Wisdom, my mind kept wanting to respond with “just like the Scribes and the Pharisees and all of those who wanted to put Jesus to death.” The Holy Spirit, however, overpowered my mind quickly and powerfully. “Look in the mirror” is what I gathered from that sudden movement within me. “Look in the mirror.”

“Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings,

reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training.” (Wisdom 2:12)

I don’t necessarily say it to anyone else. I probably don’t even say it to myself. But the process of sin — choosing my way over God’s way, doing what I want, what feels good, what’s easy, instead of doing what I should — is the same inner working that Wisdom mentions, going on within my mind and heart.

We know there are things that are good and right and true, and we know there are things that aren’t, yet we choose the wrong things so often. And too often we don’t want our consciences telling us we’ve strayed. It’s obnoxious to us. And so we justify it. “It’s not that bad. I didn’t kill anyone, did I? Everybody does it.” And still, we know.

We are sinners. We know we are sinners. Everybody sins. We even use this as an excuse. And we know just because everyone does it doesn’t make it right. Yet in our weakness, in our selfishness, we grasp for any and all excuses we can. Also in our weakness, Satan is ready to keep us leaning on those excuses and leaning on ourselves.

Jesus reminds us of the truth on this Lenten Friday. He declares it in the temple area, and if we pay attention, he declares it to us in our hearts.

“You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” (John 7:28-29)

Jesus — the Way, the Truth, and the Life — has shown us and taught us the way to the Father, the way to everlasting life. As Wisdom reminds us, we can’t let our errors blind us, and we need to remember the reward for holiness: the glories of heaven await us for following our Lord. Jesus is who we should be leaning on, and He is waiting for us to do so. Remember prayer, fasting and almsgiving? They are there to help us focus on where our hearts should be. Look in that mirror and work on that focus. And always lean on the Lord.

Al revisar la primera lectura de hoy del libro de Sabiduría, mi mente seguía queriendo responder con “como los escribas y los fariseos y todos los que querían matar a Jesús”. El Espíritu Santo, sin embargo, dominó mi mente rápida y poderosamente. “Mírate en el espejo” es lo que deduje de ese movimiento repentino dentro de mí. “Mírate en el espejo”.

Sabemos que hay cosas que son buenas, correctas y verdaderas, y sabemos que hay cosas que no lo son, pero elegimos las cosas equivocadas muy a menudo. Y con demasiada frecuencia no queremos que nuestra conciencia nos diga que nos hemos desviado. Es desagradable para nosotros. Y así lo justificamos. “No está tan mal. No maté a nadie, ¿verdad? Todo el mundo lo hace”. Y aún así, sabemos la verdad.

Somos pecadores. Sabemos que somos pecadores. Todo el mundo peca. Incluso usamos esto como excusa. Y sabemos que el hecho de que todo el mundo lo haga no significa que sea correcto. Sin embargo, en nuestra debilidad, en nuestro egoísmo, buscamos todas y cada una de las excusas que podemos. También en nuestra debilidad, Satanás está listo para mantenernos apoyándonos en esas excusas y apoyándonos en nosotros mismos.

Jesús nos recuerda la verdad en este viernes de Cuaresma. Lo declara en el área del templo, y si prestamos atención, nos lo declara en nuestro corazón.

“Conque me conocen a mí y saben de dónde vengo… Pues bien, yo no vengo por mi cuenta, sino enviado por el que es veraz; y a él ustedes no lo conocen. Pero yo sí lo conozco, porque procedo de él y él me ha enviado”. (Juan 7,28-29)

Jesús, el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida, nos ha mostrado y enseñado el camino al Padre, el camino a la vida eterna. Como nos recuerda la Sabiduría, no podemos dejar que nuestros errores nos cieguen y debemos recordar la recompensa de la santidad: las glorias del cielo nos esperan por seguir a nuestro Señor. Debemos apoyarnos en Jesús y Él está esperando que lo hagamos. ¿Recuerdas la oración, el ayuno y la limosna? Están ahí para ayudarnos a enfocarnos en dónde debería estar nuestro corazón. Mírate en ese espejo y trabaja en ese enfoque. Y siempre apóyate en el Señor.

Believing God / Creer a Dios

As people of faith, we speak about “believing in God,” but we do not often talk about “believing God.” Our readings today highlight the difference. The Israelites in the desert did not believe that the way God was showing them was the right way, and they did not believe Moses’ testimony about God’s power and authority. Instead they made a golden calf to worship, an idolatry familiar to them from pagan Egyptian worship. The Jews speaking to Jesus in the Gospel passage did not believe God when He came in the flesh, nor did they believe His servant John the Baptist, and because of this, judgment came upon them.

It might be difficult for us to understand how those who had seen miracles and had received both firsthand and secondhand testimony of God would not believe Him or His messengers. But we can forget that the same is true for us, and that perhaps we fall into this even more than the descendants of Abraham did.

We have, in a way, a more direct revelation than the Israelites did or the Jews of Jesus’ time. We have both the revelation of God in the flesh, Jesus Christ, and the orderly compilation of the most important of His words and deeds in the Gospels. We also have centuries of authoritative interpretation of Scripture through the Church. We may not have experienced the amazing natural phenomena of the Old Testament or the visible miracles of Jesus Christ of the New Testament (although some still do experience these things), but we have more testimony of God from His eyewitnesses than any of those who experienced them.

Yet still, we are living proof of the fact that knowledge does not guarantee holiness in itself. Just because we know how to be good and holy does not mean that we will. There are many factors at play, not the least of which is our fallen human nature. In addition, we have the trials and temptations of our daily experiences and the mistaken patterns of behavior we have developed as a response to pain from the past.

We must remember this — both how blessed we are to be given, in a way, more than the Israelites and the Jews, and how easy it is to fall into the same sins even with our superior knowledge of the testimony of God. Jesus points this out in the Gospel, and we must take heed.

We are called to not only believe in the existence of God, but to believe everything He says through Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium. Let’s examine our hearts, especially since we will soon enter into Holy Week. Do we truly believe what we hear about God’s eternal plan of salvation for His people? Do we believe His commands, requests, and advice when we hear His words in the Gospel? Do we truly believe that with Him, nothing is impossible?

Como personas de fe, hablamos de “creer en Dios”, pero no solemos hablar de “creer a Dios”. Nuestras lecturas de hoy resaltan la diferencia. Los israelitas en el desierto no creían que el camino que Dios les estaba mostrando era el correcto, y no creían en el testimonio de Moisés sobre el poder y la autoridad de Dios. En lugar de eso, hicieron un becerro de oro para adorarlo, una idolatría que les era familiar debido al culto pagano en Egipto. Los judíos que hablaban a Jesús en el pasaje del Evangelio no creyeron a Dios cuando vino como hombre, ni tampoco a su siervo Juan Bautista, y por eso vino el juicio sobre ellos.

Tenemos, en cierto modo, una revelación más directa que la que tuvieron los israelitas o los judíos de la época de Jesús. Tenemos tanto la revelación del Dios encarnado, Jesucristo, como la compilación ordenada de sus palabras y hechos más importantes en los evangelios. También tenemos siglos de interpretación autorizada de las Escrituras a través de la Iglesia. Puede que no hayamos experimentado los asombrosos fenómenos naturales del Antiguo Testamento o los milagros visibles de Jesucristo del Nuevo Testamento (aunque algunos todavía experimentan estas cosas), pero tenemos más testimonio de Dios de parte de Sus testigos oculares que cualquiera de aquellos que los experimentaron.

Sin embargo, somos la prueba viviente de que el conocimiento no garantiza la santidad en sí mismo. Sólo porque sabemos cómo ser buenos y santos no significa que lo seremos. Hay muchos factores en juego, uno de los cuales es nuestra naturaleza humana caída. Debemos recordar esto: cuán bendecidos somos al recibir, en cierto modo, más que los israelitas y los judíos, y cuán fácil es caer en los mismos pecados incluso con nuestro conocimiento superior del testimonio de Dios. Jesús lo señala en el Evangelio y debemos prestar atención.

Estamos llamados no sólo a creer en la existencia de Dios, sino a creer todo lo que Él dice a través de las Escrituras, la Tradición y el Magisterio. Examinemos nuestros corazones, especialmente porque pronto entraremos en la Semana Santa. ¿Realmente creemos lo que escuchamos sobre el plan eterno de salvación de Dios para su pueblo? ¿Creemos en Sus mandamientos, peticiones y consejos cuando escuchamos Sus palabras en el Evangelio? ¿Realmente creemos que para Él nada es imposible?

What’s New with God? / ¿Qué Hay de Nuevo con Dios?

When was the last time you learned something new about God?

For me, it was when my twin boys became toddlers. They were starting to become “big boys” and get more independent. They didn’t know any better, of course, but the lack of listening to Mommy and Daddy had me going crazy. They wanted to do things their way, and if they didn’t get their way, World War III would launch in approximately one second. (Okay, I may be slightly exaggerating.)

One day, while dealing with their twenty-third meltdown, the realization hit me between the eyes like a two by four. This must be what God feels like when we don’t listen, when we don’t do as he asks.  When we speak to a family member out of anger. When we neglect the poor and suffering. When we go along to get along with something that isn’t right. I didn’t like that realization at first. Now I’m convinced that God gave humanity the gift of parenthood so that we as parents can better understand our relationship to God, with God as our parent and us as His children. 

In today’s Gospel, the Jewish leaders learn something new about God, too. They learn that God is at work every day, healing and bringing peace, even on the Sabbath! As if that weren’t radical enough, Jesus also calls God “Father”, equating Himself to God. These concepts raised so much rage in the Jewish leaders that they sought to kill Jesus. 

When was the last time you learned something new about God? When you learned it, how did you react? Did it strengthen your view of God, or did you turn away in disbelief? 

This Lent, let us continue to be open to new insights about the nature and love that God the Father is so eager to show us. Let us receive the message with humble and contrite hearts, so that we may more fully grow into the reflection of Our Father that we are called to be.

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que aprendiste algo nuevo acerca de Dios?

Para mí, fue cuando mis gemelos se convirtieron en niños pequeños. Estaban empezando a convertirse en “muchachos grandes” y a volverse más independientes. Ellos no sabían, por supuesto, pero la falta de escuchar a mamá y papá me estaba volviendo loca. Querían hacer las cosas a su manera y, si no lo conseguían, la Tercera Guerra Mundial se iniciaría en aproximadamente un segundo (bueno, puede ser que exagero un poco).

Un día, mientras lidiaba con su vigésimo tercer berrinche, la comprensión me golpeó entre los ojos como una madera grande. Así debe ser lo que siente Dios cuando no le hacemos caso, cuando no hacemos lo que nos pide. Cuando hablamos con un familiar por enfado. Cuando descuidamos a los pobres y a los que sufren. Cuando nos llevamos bien con algo que no está bien. Al principio no me gustó darme cuenta. Ahora estoy convencida de que Dios le dio a la humanidad el regalo de la paternidad para que nosotros, como padres, podamos comprender mejor nuestra relación con Dios como nuestro padre y nosotros como sus hijos.

En el Evangelio de hoy, los líderes judíos también aprenden algo nuevo acerca de Dios. Aprenden que Dios está obrando todos los días, sanando y trayendo paz, ¡incluso en sábado! Como si eso no fuera lo suficientemente radical, Jesús también llama a Dios “Padre”, equiparándose a sí mismo con Dios. Estos conceptos provocaron tanta ira en los líderes judíos que intentaron matar a Jesús.

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que aprendiste algo nuevo acerca de Dios? Cuando lo aprendiste, ¿cómo reaccionaste? ¿Fortaleció tu visión de Dios o te alejaste con incredulidad?

En esta Cuaresma, sigamos abiertos a nuevos conocimientos sobre la naturaleza y el amor que Dios Padre está tan ansioso por mostrarnos. Recibamos el mensaje con corazones humildes y contritos, para que podamos crecer más plenamente en el reflejo de Nuestro Padre que estamos llamados a ser.

God’s Timing = Our Waiting / El Momento de Dios = La Espera Nuestra

It struck me that the man Jesus healed waited for 38 years. That’s a long time to suffer. St. Monica prayed patiently and persistently for many years for her son St. Augustine. We learn from her that a mother’s persistent endurance will pay off. But we still have to wait. 

I have friends who are waiting now. They have discerned a vocation of marriage and family but have not yet met their spouse. Like the man in the Gospel, they are suffering and someone else keeps getting there first.  They watch their friends and roommates pair off and get engaged, and wonder when it will be their turn. My heart feels for them. I remember that wait and the emotional toll it took. 

This Gospel reminds us that Jesus sees us. He sees us in the waiting – whether it be for physical healing, a spouse, or a child – and when the time is right, when it is just right, he will be there. Not only did he heal the man, he did it on the Sabbath. It was so important for him to heal this man who’d waited, he did it on a day when it was forbidden. He was later persecuted in part because of this action. For reasons only God knows it had to be that way and we believe it was for his glory. 

I don’t know why some people are asked to wait for their heart’s desire but I’ve come to realize through God’s grace that it is not waiting in vain nor it is waiting alone. We wait and we trust and we believe that he will be there with us, and one day, the wait will be over and God will be glorified. 

What are you waiting for?

Jesus, help me to wait patiently, trusting that your time is the right time.

Me llamó la atención que el hombre que Jesús sanó esperó 38 años. Es mucho tiempo para sufrir. Santa Mónica oró paciente y persistentemente durante muchos años por su hijo San Agustín. De ella aprendemos que la perseverancia de una madre dará fruto. Pero todavía tenemos que esperar.

Tengo amigos que están esperando actualmente. Han discernido una vocación al matrimonio pero aún no han conocido a su cónyuge. Como el hombre del Evangelio, están sufriendo porque alguien más llega primero. Ven a sus amigos y compañeros de cuarto unirse y comprometerse, y se preguntan cuándo será su turno. Mi corazón se compadece por ellos. Me acuerdo de esa espera y el precio emocional que me costó.

Este Evangelio nos recuerda que Jesús nos ve. Nos ve en la espera, ya sea por la curación física, por un cónyuge o por un hijo, y cuando sea el momento adecuado, cuando sea el más adecuado, él estará allí. No sólo sanó al hombre, sino que lo hizo en sábado. Era tan importante para él curar a este hombre que había esperado, que lo hizo en un día en que estaba prohibido. Posteriormente fue perseguido en parte por esta acción. Por razones que sólo Dios sabe, tuvo que ser así y creemos que fue para su gloria.

No sé por qué a algunas personas se les pide que esperen por el deseo de su corazón, pero me he dado cuenta, por la gracia de Dios, que no es una espera en vano ni una espera sola. Esperamos y confiamos y creemos que él estará allí con nosotros, y un día la espera terminará y Dios será glorificado.

¿Qué cosa estás esperando?

Jesús, ayúdame a esperar pacientemente, confiando en que tu momento es el momento apropiado.

A New Heaven and a New Earth / Un Cielo Nuevo y una Tierra Nueva

The Bible starts out by establishing that everything that exists is created by God. As God created the world and all that is in it, He declared it good. God doesn’t stop at simply good, He gives humanity the opportunity to participate freely in creation. 

In the beginning, Adam and Eve, on the behalf of all humanity, had the opportunity to choose to acknowledge God as their source and sustenance, or to rely on their own thinking and place themselves at the center of creation. The response of our first parents placed the rest of humanity on a much more lonely and difficult path, and left us needing to find our way back to a restored relationship with God. As we journey through Lent to Easter, today’s reading from Isaiah is a reminder. God reminds us that even though we have forgotten the proper order and for whom we are created, God never forgets. 

Everyday, God sustains all that exists. He holds everything in his hand and we exist at his thought. And everyday, He invites us to once again participate in creation. We are called to remember that each of our little choices to put God first, participates in the building of the Kingdom of God. It isn’t the big stuff, it’s the tiny little choices to put others first, to deny ourselves some immediate pleasure for the sake of a greater good. Each of those seemingly miniscule moments bring the whole world closer to restoration. 

So let’s take comfort from the words of the prophet Isaiah, so that at the end of our Lenten journey, it can be said of us too that, “he and his whole household came to believe.”

La Biblia comienza estableciendo que todo lo que existe es creado por Dios. Cuando Dios creó el mundo y todo lo que hay en él, lo declaró bueno. Dios no se limita simplemente al bien, sino que le da a la humanidad la oportunidad de participar libremente en la creación.

En el principio, Adán y Eva, en nombre de toda la humanidad, tuvieron la oportunidad de elegir reconocer a Dios como su fuente y sustento, o confiar en su propio pensamiento y colocarse en el centro de la creación. La respuesta de nuestros primeros padres colocó al resto de la humanidad en un camino mucho más solitario y difícil, y nos dejó con la necesidad de encontrar el camino de regreso a una relación restaurada con Dios. Mientras vamos avanzando desde la Cuaresma a la Pascua, la lectura de hoy de Isaías es un recordatorio. Dios nos recuerda que aunque hayamos olvidado el orden correcto y para quién fuimos creados, a Dios nunca se le olvida.

Cada día, Dios sostiene todo lo que existe. Tiene todo en su mano y existimos por su pensamiento. Y cada día nos invita a participar una vez más en la creación. Estamos llamados a recordar que cada una de nuestras pequeñas decisiones de poner a Dios en primer lugar, participa en la construcción del Reino de Dios. No se trata de las cosas grandes, sino de las pequeñas decisiones de poner a los demás en primer lugar, de negarnos a nosotros mismos algún placer inmediato para un bien mayor. Cada uno de esos momentos aparentemente minúsculos acerca al mundo entero a la restauración.

Así que, consolémonos con las palabras del profeta Isaías, para que al final de nuestro camino cuaresmal, puedan decir también de nosotros que “creyó con todos los de su casa”.
